JSRM was established in 1964 by researchers and engineers who were the members of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE), the Mining and Metallurgical Institute of Japan (currently, the Mining and Materials Processing Institute of Japan (MMIJ)), the Japanese Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engieering (currently, the Japanese Geotechninal Sociery (JGS)) and the Society of Materials Science, Japan (JSMS) to foster collaboration between JSRM and ISRM in developing innovative solutions to rock mechanics and rock engineering problems. The present JSRM is made up of members who are elected from the committee of each society.
